Cal was born in Portage la Prairie and raised on the family farm at Portage creek south of Delta Marsh, and became interested in natural history and birds at an early age. He has worked with both Riding Mountain Nature Tours and Wilderness Adventures co-leading tours with such birding companies as Birdquest, Victor Emanual Nature Tours (including a tour with the late Roger Tory Peterson), Limosa and Ornitholodays. He loves to share his knowledge of birds with others and has co-authored two bird finding guides for Manitoba. He is owner/operator of Merlin Ecotous, and currently resides in Brandon with his wife Elaine and two children Stacey and Riley.
Heidi has been involved with Delta Marsh and life at the Field Station in a variety of capacities for about 25 years. She began her long trek up the ladder as a University of Manitoba student and was appointed to the position of Assistant Director of the Delta Marsh Field Station in July 2002. She has also been in charge of the Delta Marsh Bird Observatory for the past 15 years. Heidi lives on site at Delta and always looks forward to the annual spring migration – especially those first spring arrivals which tell us that warmer weather is really not that far away.
Bob is a birder from the Portage area with research interests in duck and grouse populations. He is a former provincial biologist who worked on the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve near Tolstoi Manitoba, and still operates a MAPS banding station in the area. Bob has been involved with the Birding Festival and the Delta Marsh Bird Observatory since their inception.
Gordon was born and raised in the Oakland/Portage Creek area. He is a self-employed electrician and is married with two children. In his youth he spent many hours hunting and trapping in the Delta Marsh. Having Cal Cuthbert as a friend and next-door neighbour made it easy for him to develop a keen interest in birds and wildlife in general. He is a member of the Woodlot Association of Manitoba, and in 1993 he began a managed woodlot. One of the objectives of this project was to establish a year-round food source for native birds.
